Klio Compute vs Modal

Klio Compute and Modal side by side: where each is the better choice, features, and GPU prices per hour from Modal's own pricing page.

For agents: this page as markdown

In short

Modal: A serverless platform for running Python functions, web endpoints, batch jobs and sandboxes on CPUs and GPUs.

Klio Compute: serverless GPUs for Python. Run a function on a GPU with one decorator, deploy endpoints, task queues, schedules and sandboxes, or put an open model behind an OpenAI-compatible API, and pay per second from prepaid credit.

Where Modal is the better choice

  • More of its own platform features: Klio Compute's Modal-compatible API doesn't offer @modal.clustered, @modal.batched, @modal.web_server, @modal.wsgi_app, .remote_gen(), CloudBucketMount, region= or cloud=.
  • Multi-node training is in private beta, beyond the 8 GPUs one container can have on either platform.
  • Its Starter plan includes $30 of free credit every month, and region selection.
  • T4 GPUs, which Klio Compute doesn't list.

Where Klio Compute differs

  • Modal code runs with one changed import line, and klio migrate --check reports what works before you change anything.
  • Prepaid credit: work stops at zero instead of running up an invoice, and a monthly purchase limit caps what can be spent.
  • klio model deploy puts an open model behind an OpenAI-compatible API on your own address in one command.
  • GPU prices follow the market and are shown live; a running container keeps the price it started at.

Features

Features: Klio Compute and Modal
FeatureKlio ComputeModal
Serverless GPU functions or containersYes. Functions, endpoints, task queues and schedules on a GPU from one decorator. (docs)Yes. (source)
Scale to zeroYes. Endpoints and models stop when idle and start on the next request. (docs)Yes. Containers spin down when idle; min_containers keeps some warm. (source)
Billing per second or finerYes. Metered per second. (docs)Yes. Listed per second. (source)
Several GPUs in one containerYes. 1, 2, 4 or 8 GPUs of one type; more than one needs a paid workspace. (docs)Yes. Up to 8 GPUs on most types, up to 4 on A10. (source)
SandboxesYes. Create, run commands and code, read and write files. (docs)Yes. (source)
VolumesYes. Named volumes mounted into any container. (docs)Yes. (source)
OpenAI-compatible model servingYes. klio model deploy, for the models klio model list shows. (docs)Partly. An example you deploy as your own code runs vLLM in OpenAI-compatible mode. (source)
Runs Modal code with an import changeYes. import klio_compute.compat as modal; a few features are refused with a clear message. (docs)Yes. It is Modal. (source)
Prepaid creditYes. Top up, set a monthly purchase limit; work stops at zero. (docs)No. Workspaces are billed monthly, with early charges at usage thresholds. (source)
